Vitamin B12 Benefits; How Vitamin B12 Can Help You Live A Better Life

Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in cell metabolism; it's a water-soluble vitamin that is also known as Cobalamin. Vitamin B12 has the largest complex structure in vitamins and has multifarious benefits. Some of them include maintaining healthy nerve cells (keeping the normal nervous system) and red blood cell production. It's also good for the skin, hair, and nails. Man-made vitamin B12 is known as Cyanocobalamin and it's also recommended by Vegan experts.

  • Deficiency in foliate in the body
  • Improper diet

Vitamin B12 Benefits on Skin, Hair, and Nails:

Vitamin B12 is quite beneficial for skin cells, hair growth, and brittle nails. Taking the right dose of Vitamin B12 also helps you look pretty.

Vitamin B12 Benefits for the Skin:

A deficiency of Vitamin B12 causes Hyperpigmentation, Vitiligo, and a pale hue. Hyperpigmentation is dark patches or spots on the skin; Vitiligo is the loss of skin colour in patches - causing an uneven tone. Pale skin is due to iron deficiency that is caused by a low level of vitamin B12 in the body. Vitamin B12 helps in cell production and metabolism which gives healthy skin. For hyperpigmentation or blemishes, check post 6 Tips To Treat Face Blemishes.

Vitamin B12 Benefits for the Hair:

Hair and Beauty go side by side. Vitamin B12 is recommended for people having thin hair or hair loss. In men, hair loss is mostly genetic while in women, Vitamin B12 improves hair quality and promotes healthy hair cell production. Vitamin B12 may also help in thwarting premature hair greying. It encourages the production of red blood cells that nourishes hair follicles. After regularly taking Vitamin B12 supplements, it usually takes 3 months to see a difference in hair health. Many times, Vitamin B12 deficiency for women's hair loss is an oversight by GP so it's better to have a test if concerned about hair fall.  For more tips on healthy hair, check the post  Vitamin E Benefits for Hair.

Vitamin B12 Benefits for the Nails:

Vitamin B12 deficiency results in brittle, fragile, and abnormal nails. Vitamin B12 aids in the production of oxygen-rich red blood cells that also feed nails and it may help in giving shiny strong nails.

Vitamin B12 Benefits on Health:

Vitamin B12 just not only helps in looking pretty but also helps in feeling good. The following are its benefits to health.

Vitamin B12 Improves Depression and Anxiety:

Vitamin B12 is important in maintaining a healthy nervous system and it's linked to mood improvement. A deficiency in vitamin B12 decreases the production of serotonin which may cause low mood and depression. It's recommended to take supplements along with a healthy diet that includes fish and eggs. For better mental health, check post 7 Mental Health Tips That are Approved by Therapists.

Both NHS or Private healthcare for employees covers Mental healthcare plans. It costs around £150 -£400 for initial consultation or assessments. It may be covered by insurance or will be free of cost on NHS. Also, you can talk to a therapist online anonymously or choose betterhelp online counseling or a service of your choice.

Vitamin B12 Helps in Red Blood Cells Formation - Prevent Anemia:

Red blood cells carry oxygen through haemoglobin in the body. Vitamin B12 assists in the production of red blood cells. Sometimes the reason for anaemia (fewer red blood cells) in the body is the deficiency of vitamin B12 which causes fatigue and languidness. Anaemia due to a deficiency in vitamin  B12 is a gradual process but can become complicated if remains untreated.

Vitamin B12 Helps in Improving Heart Health:

The lower the level of vitamin B12 higher the level of homocysteine is linked to heart disease. Homocysteine is the type of amino acid that can cause heart problems. Vitamin B12 supplements may help to improve heart health.

Vitamin B12 Benefits for Menopause:

In menopause, women suffer from physical and mental fatigue and Vitamin B12 benefits in reducing these symptoms. During menopause, women may suffer from a low level of Vitamin B12 that leads to anaemia; gives fatigue. Vitamin B12 boosts energy in women going through menopause by increasing the body's iron level. It also helps in good night sleep; it encourages the production of melatonin which is the sleep hormone. As growing older, the body becomes less productive in producing these hormones so taking Vitamin B12 benefits in maintaining a good level of these hormones.

Vitamin B12 Benefits for Weight Loss:

Vitamin B12 helps in weight loss by increasing the body's metabolism. Vitamin B12 injections are given for shedding extra pounds. Vitamin B12 injections are part of the regimen in some weight loss programmes. Also, sometimes weight loss is related to a low iron level in the body that is caused by a low level of Vitamin B12 so taking this vitamin helps in weight loss.

Vitamin B12 Benefits on Bodybuilding:

Vitamin B12 benefits in metabolising protein from the food in the body. This protein metabolism results in the formation of amino acids. This amino acid helps in making the body's muscles. Also, red blood cells produced by Vitamin B12, supply oxygen to the muscles and thus play a vital role in strengthening muscles.

Foods Rich in Vitamin B12:

Foods that are rich in Vitamin B12 are:
  • Shellfish (Clams or Lobster)
  • Fishes (Sardine, Tuna, Trout, Salmon)
  • Fortified Cereal
  • Meat
  • Milk and Dairy Products
  • Eggs

Side Effects of Too Much Vitamin B12:

Vitamin B12 is quite safe to take but yes! everything in balance is good for health. Taking too much Vitamin B12 has its own side effects. Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin which means it dissolves in the water and excess vitamin flush out from the body through urine but taking extremely high doses of Vitamin B12 can cause the following side effects:

  • It can be unhealthy for people having kidney disease and diabetes. For people having 3rd stage kidney disease, take advice from GP for Vitamin B12 dose.
  • It can also trigger breakouts and give pus-filled acne.
  • In pregnant women, an exceptionally high level of Vitamin B12 gives autism in the baby.

Recommended Vitamin B12 Dose Per Day:

A healthy person usually fulfils vitamin B12 requirements from the daily diet which is 2.4 mcg per day.

It's generally not recommended for a healthy person below age 50 to take Vitamin B12 supplements. They try to cover Vitamin B12 deficiency through foods. For people above age 50, it's recommended to take 100-500mcg or 1000mcg daily (higher dose in some cases).

For pregnant women, Vitamin B12 may prevent birth defects and it's recommended to take a 2.6mcg dose per day. So what would be better than vitamin B12 if you want to look and feel good? For more information on Vitamin B12, Check Wiki.

Vitamin B12 test tends to cost around £39 -£69 for basic to an extended blood test and may be covered by insurance.
