What is Eczema and what are the Types of Eczema?

Irritated or inflamed skin is caused by different medical conditions, termed eczema. There are six types of eczema that are as follows:

Dyshidrotic Eczema:

Dyshidrotic eczema appears on the palm as itchy blisters. It's usually seen in adults younger than 40 but can affect at any age. It appears on the palm with itchiness and can also ooze.

Discoid Eczema:

This type of eczema appears as oval or round patches on any part of the body. First, it comes up on the skin as several tiny bumps then join up to form a larger brown or pink patch. They are itchy and make the skin swollen. They can also be filled with ooze.

Contact Dermatitis:

This type of eczema is caused by contact with a certain substance. This eczema can be controlled if that substance is identified and avoided. Contact dermatitis makes the skin red, dry, and itchy. It appears a few hours or days after the skin is exposed to the substance.

Varicose Eczema:

Varicose eczema appears on the lower part of the legs and it's caused by improper blood flow in the leg's veins. There can be different reasons for improper blood flow. It can be from a blood clot in the vein to an infection. Check by a GP for proper treatment.

Seborrhoeic Eczema:

Seborrhoeic eczema is also termed dandruff. It usually appears on the sides of the eyebrows, nose, ears, and scalp. For treating dandruff, check the post How To Get Rid Of Dandruff.

Atopic Eczema:

Atopic eczema appears in children younger than a year old but in some cases, adults can also develop it. It's a long-term condition but proper treatment may help in completely clearing up this eczema.

Benefits of Tea Tree Oil on Eczema:

Tea Tree Oil for Eczema on the Scalp:

Tea tree oil is an essential oil and every essential oil needs to be diluted before applying to the skin or hair. Essential oil is diluted by carrier oil. Tea tree oil can be mixed with carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil. Mix 12 drops of tea tree oil in 30 ml of carrier oil; massage this mixture on the scalp for a few minutes. Apply it regularly and wash hair with a shampoo that suits the scalp's skin.

Tea tree oil has healing properties and it soothes the itchy scalp. It can also be used as a conditioner. Apply a few drops of tea tree oil mixture after the hair wash, wash it again with water or leave it on the hair then let it dry. It may help in making better scalp condition and heal itchiness and dryness that is caused by eczema. Tea tree oil anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties attack the fungus and assist Seborrhoeic eczema to clear up.

Tea Tree Oil for Eczema on Face/Feet/Hands:

Tea tree oil can be used on Eczema on the face/ hands/ feet but needs to be diluted. Make a bottle of 30 ml mixture of carrier oil and tea tree oil and apply it daily after a face wash or on a clean face. The same procedure is applied to hands and feet. It makes the skin better and rejuvenates it through its healing properties. It also cures nail fungus.

Since eczema is mostly caused by dry skin, applying this mixture several times a day will help. Also, try not to use soap because soaps are alkaline in nature and tend to make skin dryer. Instead of soap, use a mild cleanser and there are tea tree oil face wash, toner, shampoo and moisturisers available in the market that gives soothing effects on the skin. Also, for dry skin check the post 'How To Heal Dry Skin'.

Never wash your face with hot water as it can trigger eczema; always use tepid water. Although tea tree oil is one of the best home remedies for eczema, face skin is sensitive as compared to other parts of the body, stop using it in case of any side effects.

Tea Tree Oil for Eczema in Ears:

Tea tree oil helps with treating eczema on the body and some also use it to ease ear infection symptoms but it may damage the inner ear. Apply tea tree oil mixture to the outer ear eczema and always use diluted tea tree oil.

Tea Tree Oil and Vaseline:

A mixture of tea tree oil and Vaseline can be used as a daily moisturiser. Add one or two drops of tea tree oil in a pinch of Vaseline and apply several times on the affected area daily. Vaseline itself doesn't help with the healing process of eczema but smooths cracked and dry skin. Tea tree oil helps with healing and together they work wonderfully.

Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil:

As both are essential oils so it's better to mix them with a carrier oil to avoid any side effects. Mix 6 drops of tea tree oil and 6 drops of lavender oil in 30 ml carrier oil. For a better result, use it daily as required.

Tea Tree Oil Bath for Eczema:

Bath can make eczema worse and it's not easy to take a bath when the skin is eczema-prone. There are a few measures that can be taken to avoid making eczema worse. Avoid using bath soaps as they make skin dryer and irritated. Also, bath water temperature should not be hot or cold, it's best to have tepid water. Use bath products that are made for eczema-prone skin. Add 10-15 drops of pure Tea tree oil to the bath to heal the body's cells. After the bath, generously apply the Tea tree oil mixture to the body. Its aromatherapy improves the immune system and helps in fighting infections.
