Top 3 Vitamin C Benefits for Health/Skin/Hair

What does Vitamin C Do?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that works as an antioxidant in the body. These antioxidants protect the body from cell damage that is caused by free radicals. Oxidative stress is harmful to the body and antioxidants help in stabilising free radicals caused by oxidative stress. It is important to know about Oxidative Stress, and Its Remedies to learn how to deal with it.

Why You Should Care about Vitamin C in Your Diet?

Vitamin C plays a vital role in the development and repair of body tissues. It's multifarious health and beauty benefits that one should know. It produces a protein that makes skin, tendons and blood vessels. Many beauty brands found incredible benefits of  Vitamin C for skin and hair; these brands are now adding Vitamin C to their various products. Also, it's an important source of major body functions.

Top 3 Vitamin C Benefits

Vitamin C has so many benefits for skin, hair, and health. Below are the three main benefits that one can get from Vitamin C.

1. Vitamin C Benefits for Skin

Fades Face Scars

Antioxidants in Vitamin C help in repairing damaged skin cells. Vitamin C helps in fading acne scars and improves uneven skin tone caused by UVA and UVB damage.

Reduces Wrinkles' Appearance

Vitamin C boosts the production of collagen which helps in improving skin elasticity and waning fine lines. For youthful skin and preventing wrinkles, taking Vitamin C in the diet and applying a cream, serum, or toner having vitamin C in it helps a lot.

Helps in Skin Whitening

Vitamin C helps in skin whitening by inhibiting the production of tyrosinase. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that encourages the production of melanin pigments. When Vitamin C inhibits the production of tyrosinase then it lowers the production of melanin. The less melanin, the fairer the complexion.

2. Vitamin C Benefits for Hair

Improves Hair Growth

Hair loss is linked with a lower level of iron in the body. Vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron; encourages hair growth.

Improves Hair Quality

Vitamin C in the body produces a protein that is called collagen. Collagens improve hair quality and give smooth hair texture.

3. Vitamin C Benefits for Health

Helps in Weight Loss

After exercise or any activities, those having a higher level of Vitamin C in the body oxidise 30% more fat than those having a lower level of Vitamin C. Thus if one has difficulty in burning fat then he/she can take more Vitamin C in the diet to aid the process of weight loss.

Improves Immune System

Since Vitamin C is packed with antioxidants so its main purpose is to safeguard the body from free radicals. Free radicals in the body can develop serious health conditions. A deficiency in Vitamin C gives impaired immunity and one can become more susceptible to maladies like heart disease, cancer, and early ageing.

Helps in Lowering Blood Pressure

Vitamin C can help in lowering blood pressure. According to scientists from the Hopkins University of Medicine, taking Vitamin C in the diet can lower blood pressure to some extent. For this, one needs to take a higher dose of Vitamin C up to 500 mg per day. Vitamin C also removes excess fluid from the body which reduces the stress within blood vessels.

Reduces the Risk of Chronic Disease

According to the studies, a lower level of Vitamin C in the body results in long-term diseases. Those who take sufficient Vitamin C per day are not at risk of many chronic diseases like eye diseases, neurodegenerative conditions, etc.

Helps in Lowering the Risk of Developing Heart disease

There are some risk factors that cause heart disease. These risk factors include high blood pressure, high bad (LDL) cholesterol levels, low good (HDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Vitamin C fights these risk factors and lowers the chances of developing heart disease. According to nine studies, those having a Vitamin C intake of 700 mg per day have a 25% lesser chance of developing heart disease than those who don't take it.

Vitamin C helps in Lowering the Risk of Memory Loss

Vitamin C is good at protecting memory. According to some studies, taking recommended Vitamin C dose daily protects memory as one age. Also, dementia is developed in people having a lower level of Vitamin C in the blood.

Improve Iron Absorption in the Body

One of the Vitamin C Benefits is to improve iron absorption in the body. It holds non-heme iron (found in plant-based foods) and is stored in a form that is easily absorbed by the body.
Those having a lower level of iron in the body can take foods high in iron with Vitamin C supplements or foods to increase their absorption.

Foods having Vitamin C

The following are good sources of Vitamin C.
  • Oranges
  • Strawberries
  • Guavas
  • Papayas
  • Tomatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Potatoes
  • Bell peppers

Daily Intake of Vitamin C

For adults, it's recommended to take 40 mg of Vitamin C per day. Don't take more than 1000 mg of Vitamin C per day as it can be harmful. It's advisable to take daily Vitamin C from a varied and balanced diet. It can't be stored in the body so one needs to take it on daily basis.
