12 Self Care Tips for Healthy Mind/Body/Soul

What is the Mind, Body, and Soul Connection?

Before knowing about self-care tips, we need to be aware of the mind, body, and soul connection so as to understand our needs and wants.

The mind, body, and soul connection means our wellness is just not only dependent on physical health but also on mental and spiritual health. This is the awareness that we are more than just our thoughts. We are our bodies, emotions, and souls. All of them need care for living a better life. They give us identities, control our health, and make us who we are.

Compassion for self is the main key to self-care.

Self Care Tips

4 Key Aspects of Self-Care:

There are four aspects of self-care to acknowledge for our well-being.

#1 Emotional Health:

Our emotional health is revolved around relationships with ourselves and others. The supportive people around us who give love and care, have a great impact on our emotional health.

Address any issues in the relationship that are creating troubles. Practice giving love and being positive as it stops or makes it harder for the negative energies to be around you for a long. Taking care of yourself and setting healthy boundaries in relationships would help you in nourishing your emotional health.

#2 Physical Health:

Good physical health needs healthy eating, drinking an adequate amount of water per day, and being physically active.

Taking some time away from technology like mobiles, laptops, and tablets, and enjoying physical activities is good for health and well-being. A sedentary lifestyle can diabolically affect physical health.

#3 Psychological Health:

Self-care for psychological health is to work for personal and professional development. Make a personal development planner. Note your awareness, reflection, values, goal setting, and planning for the development. Also, the holistic psychologist would help you to achieve this.

When noticing that mental health stigma hinders your development, getting feedback from counselling or supervision would help. Read Depression and Anxiety: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment to know more about these mental health conditions.

#4 Soul Health:

Self-care for the soul may include prayer or meditation. This is to be aware of the non-material aspect of life.

When noticing symptoms of anxiety attacks, sessional depression, perceiving a sense of incompetence, insomnia, questioning religious beliefs, or feeling abandoned by God then it's time to work on soul health.

Balancing the mind, body, and soul is vital to living life to its fullest.

12 Self-care Tips for Healthy Mind, Body, and Soul:

The following are the 9 useful tips that help in the filliping soul, physical, psychological, and emotional health:

#1 Being Aware of Mental Health:

A good mental health definition is the level of psychological well-being and absence of mental illnesses. This is interpreted as functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment.

Mental health matters a lot. Be conscious of your emotions and spot any warning signs. A healthy mind in a healthy body works as a safeguard. Discuss anything related to mental health stigma with a counselor. Keep a record of stress symptoms, mood swings, or panic attack symptoms as it helps in working out what boosts mood and what makes you feel low. This aids in planning the situation ahead or simply avoiding or changing them. You can also use online mood diary apps; they are quite handy to use.

Living with someone with depression can also affect the people around them. Acknowledge the signs of depression in children and discuss them with the school nurse. Mental health in young people should be discussed earlier rather than ignored.

10% of children and young people (aged 5-16 years) have a clinically diagnosable mental health problem, yet 70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age. (Children's Society, 2008)

Both NHS or Private healthcare for employees covers Mental healthcare plans. It costs around £150 -£400 for initial consultation or assessments. It may be covered by insurance or will be free of cost on NHS. Also, you can talk to a therapist online anonymously or choose betterhelp online counseling or a service of your choice.

There are different types of praying in different religions like the prayer of Jabez, the angelus, Hebrew prayer, divine mercy Chaplet or divine mercy prayer, or offering Salah, and so on. Even there is a way of prayer for atheists. Do a prayer for hope, peace, and strength. Istikhara prayer is a way of knowing about taking some steps would help or not.

There are different ways of doing meditation like guided meditation, meditation transcendental, movement or focused meditation, and so on. Do the one that you enjoy to connect the mind, body, and soul.

  4. Hold empty lungs for 4 seconds
  5. Repeat this process for 5 minutes.
There are different types of breathing techniques like yoga breathing, Breath focus, alternate nostril breathing, resonant breathing, and so on that one can look for.

One of the self-care tips is to do relaxation techniques. There can be a variety of ways to calm down and feel relaxed. This can include taking a warm bath, going on a walk, aromatherapy, self-massage, Tai chi, drinking warm milk, and so on.

Don't rush after doing relaxation exercises like meditation, mindfulness, or deep breathing exercises to avoid dizziness. Sit with closed eyes for a few minutes and make sure to not feel dizzy after opening them then you can stand up.

#7 Getting into Nature:

Getting into nature helps to feel better and connect to the mind, body, and soul. Go for a walk in nature. This can be a lush green valley, verdant meadows, nature reserves, or the countryside. These places would give you a sense of peace and calmness. The scent and breath of the natural wonders help in escape from day-to-day worries.

If there is no green environment nearby then decorate your garden and enjoy green there. If there is no garden then one can decorate the home with indoor plants as this would also give some sense of relaxation.

#8 Do Activities that Make you Happy:

Make a list of activities that you love to do and save it on the phone. When feeling bored, check the list and enjoy doing one of your favourite activities. This could be painting drawing, baking, organising the home, listening to podcasts, or watching a series, and so on.

It is best to note down your favourite activities when feeling good so you don't need to think about self-care activities when feeling burnt out.

#9 Practice Gratitude:

Practising gratitude helps in opening up the door to more relationships. This practice enhances empathy and reduces aggression. People who are grateful can sleep better at night. This aids in recognising the blessings in our lives and experiencing them close by.

Every day or especially during hard times note three blessings in a journal. Tell someone you love and care for them. Appreciate those who love and care for you. Notice the beauty in nature. Be kind and forgiving. Smile often and eschew negative media or movies.

#10 Nourish Social Life:

Make time for your social life. Connect with family or friends. If you don't have time to call then giving them a text can also make a difference. Connecting with people makes us feel valued and confident.

Some might not have supportive friends or family members. Then can go to community events where they can find like-minded people or join a local book club or sports team.

#11 Encourage a Good Sleeping Habit:

Make a good sleeping habit. Good sleep has a lot of positive effects on our health and well-being. During deep sleeping, our bodies recover and heal. Therefore, it is recommended to sleep 7-9 hours of sleep for adults per day.

There are multifarious benefits of sleeping but it should not give you sleep anxiety. Go to bed when feeling tired and need rest. Resting on the bed in aim to get sleep without feeling sleepy might give sleep anxiety.  Know the sleep's importance and if have trouble sleeping then check the post,' How to Get a Better Night Sleep'.

#12 Take Care of Your Health and Fitness:

Being active keeps you healthy and helps to connect the mind & body. Workout exercises help in managing and reducing stress. Exercise daily or at least 3-5 days per week to keep yourself fit. Good exercise is just not only helps in reducing stress but also tones the body.

Exercise benefits include up to 35% reduction in the chances of coronary heart disease, 50% lower the chances of type 2 diabetes, up to 83% lower the risk of osteoarthritis, and 30% lower the chances of developing depression and its benefits are so on.

Women's gym workouts can be strenuous for some so they can do fitness workouts at home at their own pace. Toning for women can take a while to adjust to the workout exercises.
